The 33-year-old had attracted strong interest from Chelsea, with Sunderland rejecting an initial offer of eight million pounds. He was initially open to reuniting with former Bayer Leverkusen coach Xabi Alonso, then reaffirmed his commitment late last week after talks with the club hierarchy.

Xhaka informed Alonso of his decision over the weekend and Chelsea accepted defeat. Sunderland hinted at the call with a social post referencing the 'We've got Granit Xhaka' chant, which he then shared.

Switzerland reached the World Cup quarter-finals for the first time since 1954 after a penalty shootout win over Colombia. They face Argentina in the early hours of Monday for a place in the last four.

"I decided to stay where I am; family is the most important thing. I am ready to make history with them."

"It's incredible." "We know what the World Cup means."
