Granit Xhaka told Sunderland supporters that Europa League qualification is only the beginning, delivering an emotional address on the Stadium of Light pitch.

According to Sunderland Echo, a capacity crowd stayed for a post-match lap of appreciation after a 2-1 victory over Chelsea on the final day secured a seventh-place Premier League finish.

As fans sang his name, the captain thanked the owner, Flo, the coach and everyone at the club, and praised the backing home and away. He said the squad want more and that this felt like the start.

Head coach Régis Le Bris also spoke on the pitch, thanking supporters for their impressive backing across the campaign. He referenced last year’s Wembley trip on 24 May, called the date special, and saluted the owners, head of football and staff for their work.

Le Bris hailed the players’ effort and told fans to enjoy the summer. Xhaka urged supporters to savour the moment and said they would see them soon.
