Granit Xhaka told Sunderland supporters that Europa League qualification is only the start. He delivered an emotional on-pitch message after the 2-1 win over Chelsea sealed seventh place on the final day.

According to Sunderland Echo, a capacity crowd stayed for a post-match lap of appreciation as the captain addressed fans on the Stadium of Light pitch.

He thanked the owner, Flo and the head coach, as well as players and staff, and said the backing home and away had been crucial. As captain, he promised this was just the beginning and that the team want more success on Wearside.

He urged supporters to savour the moment and said they would see them again soon.

Head coach Régis Le Bris also spoke, thanking fans for their backing across the campaign. He recalled last year’s Wembley trip and said 24 May is a special date for the club. He added thanks to the owners, head of football and backroom staff, calling the season a massive achievement for players who had worked hard.

Le Bris encouraged supporters to enjoy the summer and said the team would need them again next season, aiming to raise levels further.
