Granit Xhaka’s remaining book value helps explain why a modest Chelsea offer would not stack up for Sunderland.
Sunderland signed the captain in a package worth around £17.5million on a three-year deal, amortised at roughly £5.8million per year, according to Sunderland Echo.
After one season, about £5.5million to £6million would have been written off, leaving an estimated remaining book value near £11.5million to £12million. The precise figure is uncertain because elements of the original fee, add-ons and their accounting treatment are not public.
A bid of around £10million would likely sit below that mark and produce an accounting loss. Offers in the £12million to £12.5million bracket hover around break-even and do not constitute profit.
Profit only begins above the remaining book value. Numbers closer to £15million start to look more appealing, and anything approaching the original £17.5million would recover most of Sunderland’s overall commitment.
Yet this is not just a spreadsheet call. Xhaka is central to Régis Le Bris’ midfield and dressing room, and Sunderland do not want to sell unless a fee is simply too strong to ignore.
