Home World Cup a point of contention? Davies puts Bayern in a difficult position

The situation surrounding Alphonso Davies is increasingly becoming a delicate balancing act for FC Bayern. Following his new muscle injury, the focus is now not only on the Canadian’s sporting future, but also on his participation in the home World Cup

As BILD reports, the left-back’s injury is a muscle tear in the back of his thigh, an injury that would normally require a rehabilitation break of around six weeks

The problem from FC Bayern’s point of view is that the national associations are allowed to release their players for the World Cup in around three weeks‘ time

Canada hopes for a lightning comeback

Nevertheless, optimism seems to prevail in Canada, where it is apparently assumed that Davies could be ready for action again after just four to five weeks – and thus be fit in time for the start of the tournament

However, such a scenario would involve enormous risks for Munich, who do not really want to take any more risks with Davies, especially after the numerous setbacks of recent months

The 25-year-old has repeatedly struggled with muscle problems since tearing his cruciate ligament in March 2025 and has never really found his way back into a stable rhythm

Particularly problematic from the club’s point of view: even if Davies were to travel with Canada merely as a spectator or leading player, this could make his rehabilitation considerably more difficult

According to the report, Bayern are particularly concerned about the strain caused by the numerous trips during the tournament. Intercontinental flights and constant changes of location within North America could have a negative impact on the healing process

Internally, a complete and controlled rehab in Munich is apparently still preferred

Emotional topic for Davies

For Davies himself, however, missing out on the World Cup would be a huge blow. The World Cup is taking place in his home country of Canada for the first time – and the Bayern star has long been regarded as the face of the entire tournament there. As captain and national hero, Davies is hugely important to the Canadian team

Even recently, sporting director Christoph Freund openly admitted that the many injuries were also taking their toll on the full-back mentally

Vincent Kompany even said that the recurring minor setbacks were particularly difficult mentally

Bayern are now faced with a real dilemma: on the one hand, the club wants to protect the player as much as possible and build him up again in the long term. On the other hand, it would be emotionally difficult for Davies to cope with missing the World Cup at home completely.
