Ben Brereton Diaz joined Derby County on loan from Southampton this summer, but may face an early exit as January approaches
MLS outfit Toronto FC are reportedly interested in signing Ben Brereton Diaz as early as January, with the forward currently spending the season on loan with Derby County in the EFL Championship from Southampton.
Having secured safety in the EFL Championship last season under John Eustace, Derby County underwent a busy summer rebuild.
The likes of Patrick Agyemang and Max Johnston joined the Rams for multi-million-pound fees, whilst Eustace sought a reunion with several former Blackburn Rovers players, including Lewis Travis, Dion Sanderson, Andreas Weimann, and Danny Batth.
Derby rounded off their busy window with the loan additions of David Ozoh, Owen Beck, Bobby Clark, and Ben Brereton Diaz, the latter of whom has recently been linked with a switch to Canada with MLS outfit Toronto FC, according to Luca Bendoni via X.
The Chilean international striker joined the club on loan from Southampton, after it was made clear to him that he would have no part to play at St Mary's this season.
Brereton Diaz has struggled to find form since his switch to Pride Park. However, scoring just once without assisting in 16 league appearances thus far, failing to impress the majority of Rams fans, with an early exit this January on the cards.
Brereton Diaz signed for Southampton in the summer of 2024 for £7 million from Spanish outfit Villarreal, but failed to impress during his stay in the Premier League with the Saints, subsequently heading out on loan with Sheffield United in January 2025.
Now on loan with Derby, according to Capology, the Chilean is estimated to be earning £25,000 per week at the club - which is what he is paid at Southampton - making him the joint-highest earner at Derby as they're currently paying his salary, and he tops the list alongside Carlton Morris.
It would be fair to suggest that so far, he hasn't been worth the money so far, and unless he is to hit a rich vein of form within the next couple of weeks, Derby fans would not lose too much sleep over the prospect of his loan being cut short.
Indeed, Brereton Diaz has struggled to hit any sort of form over the past few years since he departed from Blackburn in 2023, with a move to the MLS a potential destination for the Stoke City academy graduate.
Any sort of move would, of course, have to have the agreement of all parties involved, including John Eustace and Derby, as, although he has struggled for form since his loan switch, he has remained a regular in the side, and it remains to be seen what sort of stance the Rams would take over an early exit.

Still only 26, Brereton Diaz ought to be approaching the peak of his career, but finds himself with a link to the MLS with Toronto FC.
The top league in the USA has garnered a reputation for the majority of their foreign signings entering the latter stages of their career, which simply isn't the case for the Chilean.
Whether he would be open to a move to Canada is still up for speculation, but he, too, can't be pleased with his current output at Derby.
If he is to find form once more and show signs of becoming the player that he once was at Blackburn, a move to Toronto could be a good option for him.
His contract at Southampton is due to expire in the summer of 2028, and it's unclear what sort of fee they would demand for Brereton Diaz over a potential permanent move, but they would likely hope to recoup the bulk of the £7 million they spent just 18 months ago.
