We looked at how Liam Delap's wages at Chelsea compare to the top earners at his former club Ipswich Town.

Striker Liam Delap was one of a number of players to depart Ipswich Town in the summer following their relegation from the Premier League.

It was an incredibly disappointing campaign for Ipswich last season as they were relegated after just one year in the top flight, but despite his side's struggles, Delap was one man who certainly caught the eye.

Delap was linked with many of the biggest clubs in England after his impressive season for the Tractor Boys, and Manchester United were said to be in pole position to land his signature at one stage, but he eventually joined Chelsea for a fee of £30 million.

With other key players such as Axel Tuanzebe, Cameron Burgess, Sam Morsy, Omari Hutchinson and Nathan Broadhead also departing Portman Road this summer, Ipswich manager Kieran McKenna had a big rebuilding job on his hands ahead of the club's return to the Championship, but the money from the sale of Delap certainly helped with that task.

Boosted by the income from Delap's exit, the Tractor Boys spent big in the summer transfer window on the likes of Darnell Furlong, Azor Matusiwa, Marcelino Nunez and Sindre Walle Egeli, and while their new-look team is yet to fully gel, they have shown enough to suggest they can emerge as a real force in the second half of the season.

Delap may now be considered one of the most talented young English strikers around, but that was not always the case, and his career was at something of a crossroads not that long ago following disappointing Championship loan spells with Stoke City and Preston North End.

However, Delap really made a name for himself during his loan at Hull City in the 2023-24 season as he scored eight goals in 32 appearances, including netting in a memorable 3-3 draw against Ipswich towards the end of the campaign.

Delap's performances at the MKM Stadium convinced the Tractor Boys to sign him in a deal worth up to £20 million last summer following their promotion to the Premier League, and while some felt it was a risk to pay such a substantial fee for a striker who did not even reach double figures in the Championship the previous season, the gamble certainly paid off for the Suffolk outfit.

While Delap's goals may ultimately not have been enough to save Ipswich from relegation, the 22-year-old was one of their shining lights throughout the season as he scored 12 goals and provided two assists in 40 appearances in all competitions, with that form earning him the move to Chelsea this summer.

Delap made the perfect start to his Blues career as he scored one goal and provided one assist in six appearances during their successful Club World Cup campaign, but it has been much tougher for him at Stamford Bridge since the start of the top flight season, with injuries preventing him from showing what he is capable of.

As Delap's frustration at Chelsea continues, we looked at how much his wages at his new club compare to some of Ipswich's highest paid players.

Liam Delap's Chelsea wages compared to Ipswich Town's top earners

According to Capology, Delap earns £100,000-a-week and £5,200,000-a-year at Chelsea, although it should be stressed that those figures are estimates.

Given that Delap was said to be on £20,000-a-week at Ipswich last season, his salary has increased significantly following his move to Stamford Bridge, but he still receives far less than the Blues' biggest earner, the out-of-favour Raheem Sterling, who is on a staggering £325,000-a-week.

After the summer departures, the Tractor Boys' wage bill will be vastly reduced in the Championship this season, and Dara O'Shea, Leif Davis and Jens Cajuste are their joint-highest paid players at £35,000-a-week, although some of the latter's salary will likely be paid by his parent club Napoli.

Ashley Young, Ben Johnson and Azor Matusiwa are joint-second on the list, with the trio each taking home £30,000-a-week, while the likes of Darnell Furlong and George Hirst (both £27,500-a-week), Chuba Akpom (£26,000-a-week) and Jacob Greaves, Sammie Szmodics, Jack Clarke and Jaden Philogene (all £25,000-a-week) are also among the club's top earners.

Of course, those are still eye-watering numbers, but the fact that Delap now earns £65,000 more a week than Ipswich's highest paid players underlines the financial disparity between the Premier League and the Championship.
