The former Ballon d'Or winner has recently purchased a stake in the Welsh club

The words 'Luka Modric, minority owner at Swansea City' will still feel like something out of a fever dream for many Swans fans today, and likely will for at least a few more weeks.

The Croat is the most decorated player at the most famous club in world football, winning 28 trophies across his near 13-year stint at Real Madrid and, despite his investment in Swansea City, the 39-year-old doesn't look to be slowing down his playing career any time soon, per the report from Fabrizio Romano.

Real Madrid's oldest-ever player's involvement with the club is to garner the Championship side global attention primarily, which isn't uncommon in the game. When you think of Birmingham City's owners, a neutral mind will think of Tom Brady - but the NFL legend only owns 3.3% of the current League One champions.

Whilst Swansea will likely look to rely on his footballing nous, rather than his career earnings, being on the bankroll at Real Madrid for over a decade has set Modric as one of the richest players in football.

Luka Modric's current earnings at Real Madrid are down from prior years

According to Capology, Modric took a pay cut this past summer as he signed a new one-year extension with Los Blancos. As the Croat started to push 40, his new salary reflected a role within the side where he was not starting every game.

His current contract sees him earn £172,247 per week, which is way behind the top earners at the club. Kylan Mbappe earns £516,577 per week, whilst England star Jude Bellingham and Brazilian winger Vinicius Junior earn £344,330 per week.

However, Capology estimates that for the five seasons prior to the current campaign, Modric earned £361,686 per week. Last season, his salary placed him among the top three earners at the club, behind Toni Kroos and David Alaba.

Overall, Modric has earned an estimated £154,682,134 from just his yearly contracts at Real Madrid. And with the classy midfielder showing no signs of slowing down anytime soon, that number may increase over the next couple of years.

Luka Modric's stake in Swansea City just makes sense

Modric last played in Swansea on New Year's Day 2011. Now, if you'd have told a then-26-year-old Modric that, over 13 years later, he would have a stake in that club, I'm sure he'd have called you crazy.

But given Swansea City's recognisable style of play and the trajectory of club ownership in the modern game, Modric at Swansea makes perfect sense.

The Swans have prided themselves on possession-based, easy-on-the-eye football since the mid-2000s under Roberto Martinez. And, even at 39, there aren't many in the game today who play in such an aesthetically pleasing manner as Modric.

Swansea's CEO, Tom Gorringe, described Modric as a "role model," so the 39-year-old's involvement is a bid to inspire the current crop of players at the Swansea.com Stadium, whilst also attracting global attention towards the club.

This likely doesn't mean that Modric's next destination at the expiry of his current contract will be the Swansea.com Stadium, as much as Swansea fans would love that. But his investment can only provide excitement among those associated with the club.
