Real Madrid great Luka Modric is set to become a new minority owner of Swansea City.

The Croatian, who turns 40 in September, is taking a non-controlling stake in the Welsh club.

Modric’s purchase of the shareholding will not impact his career on the pitch, where he continues to star for Real. He is out of contract with Loc Blancos this summer but is keen to retire with Real and may extend his stay at the Bernabeu for a further year if it can be agreed.

It comes as a surprise that he has decided to buy a minority stake in Swansea, who sit 12th in the Championship.

The move suggests Modric, the 2018 Ballon d’Or winner, is laying the groundworks for his life after his playing career.

In November, Jason Levien and Steve Kaplan’s eight-year spell as the owners of Swansea came to an end when they sold their majority stake to shareholders Andy Coleman, Brett Cravatt and Nigel Morris and businessman Jason Cohen.

While a player at Tottenham, Modric played the full 90 minutes in both of his meetings with Swansea, a 1-1 draw in December 2011 and 3-1 win in April 2012.

Modric has earned 186 caps for Croatia since his senior international debut in 2006, and he will have his eye on making an appearance at the 2026 World Cup while in his 40s if Croatia manage to qualify for the tournament.
