It has been reported by journalist Dan Marsh that the Lions are taking a look at the midfielder following his exit from Ipswich Town.

The 32-year-old is working with Alex Neil’s side, and could arrive to bolster their midfield options amid the departures of George Saville and George Honeyman.

Luongo spent three seasons at Portman Road, helping them gain promotion from both League One and the Championship in that time.

Here we take a look at estimated figures from Capology to see how much Millwall may need to pay the player in order to convince him to join for next season…

Massimo Luongo’s Ipswich wages

Luongo joined Ipswich in the 2023 January transfer window following his departure from Middlesbrough.

He featured 15 times in League One, with Kieran McKenna’s side earning promotion to the Championship.

He was instrumental in the Tractor Boys then earning a second promotion in a row, appearing 44 times in the second tier, contributing three goals.

However, his game time dropped off with the club then in the Premier League, playing 11 times in the top flight, including only two starts.

The midfielder departed at the end of the campaign following the expiration of his contract.

The Australian was initially earning £5,000 per week from the Suffolk outfit following his move from Middlesbrough.

But as his importance to the side grew and the club’s status rose from League One to the Premier League, his salary jumped up to £10,000-a-week last season.

The Australian will be hoping to earn that much with his next team, but he could potentially be convinced to take a pay cut for the right move.

With the midfielder already training with Neil’s side, it bodes well for whether they can persuade him to join Millwall for next season.

Millwall’s top earners

Of the clubs competing in the Championship in the 2024/25 campaign, the Lions ranked 14th in the division for their squad’s salary cost.

The London outfit paid £314,192 per week to their players, with the team coming eighth in the table.

In comparison, Leeds United had the highest weekly wage bill, which was worth £722,500.

The highest-paid player in the first team squad was Japhet Tanganga, with the defender receiving £35,000 per week.

Joe Bryan (£32,500-a-week), Aaron Connolly (£27,500), Luke Cundle (£15,000) and Ryan Wintle (£12,000) rounded out the top five.

The average weekly salary was £8,728 per week, so Luongo would be an above-average paid player at Millwall on that basis, if he were to join.

This is an encouraging sign that Luongo’s salary shouldn’t prove a major stumbling block to completing a deal.

The midfielder could prove a smart addition to the squad given his free agent status, and thus the relatively low cost to finalising the move.
