Newcastle United travel to the Gtech Community Stadium to face Brentford on Sunday afternoon, hoping to carry their Champions League form into the Premier League.
The Magpies have made a shocking start to the season, picking up a meagre 12 points from their opening 10 games.
For context, a win against Brentford may not be enough for Newcastle to creep into the top half of the table if other results don’t go their way.
Nonetheless, Sunday’s outing is a must-win six-pointer for the Magpies, and they’d be keen to build on their midweek success in the Champions League.
Eddie Howe’s troops picked up a comfortable win against Athletic Club.
But they’ll head into this weekend’s fixture hoping to make up for their shocking 3-1 Premier League defeat against West Ham United.
Newcastle’s record against Brentford suggests the fans may have more to cheer about this weekend.
The Magpies have won six of their last seven Premier League games against Brentford, with a 4-2 defeat against the Bees back in December 2024 ruining an otherwise perfect winning streak.
Ominously, that solitary defeat came in West London and Newcastle’s task was made much more difficult when Anthony Gordon limped off injured in midweek.
Howe isn’t famous for chopping and changing his line-up for every fixture, but Gordon’s setback could force the Englishman to make a minor tweak to his set-up this weekend.
Speaking at his pre-match press conference, the Magpies boss confirmed that Gordon was in a race against time to be fit for the Brentford clash.
However, the England international is unlikely to play any part in this weekend’s must-win encounter.
Gordon’s unavailability means Howe will likely make just one change to the side that clinically dispatched Athletic in midweek.
That means Nick Pope will retain his place in goal after keeping a clean sheet in the Champions League.
Dan Burn was on the score sheet with a sublime header in midweek and should line up alongside Sven Botman, Malick Thiaw, and Kieran Trippier in defence.
Joelinton will fancy his chances of scoring in back-to-back games alongside Sandro Tonali and Bruno Guimaraes in midfield.
With Gordon out, Harvey Barnes is in line to make his first Premier League start in nearly two months.
He’ll likely link up with Nick Woltemade and Jacob Murphy in the frontline.
