Eddie Howe has provided an injury update on Anthony Gordon and Sven Botman ahead of Newcastle’s Carabao Cup semi-final against Arsenal.

Gordon was substituted during the 2-1 win at Tottenham Hotspur on Saturday, having earlier sustained a nasty cut to the nose. The 23-year-old was caught in the face by Dejan Kulusevski’s shoulder, though no penalty was awarded.

Howe praised the winger’s performances at Spurs, in which Gordon scored Newcastle’s equaliser, and suggested he will be fit to feature at Arsenal on Tuesday night.

“Anthony was in a bit of discomfort, I would say. Only with the cut, which was a nasty looking one,” Howe said at his pre-match press conference.

“Looking back at the decision, I thought it was a foul, I thought it was a clear penalty. He came away from that incident with blood on himself so we dusted him down. He went back on the pitch and performed really well for us. I thought he had a really good game, so we will see how he is today.”

Howe also said Sven Botman will be assessed ahead of the trip to the Emirates. The centre-back made his return from 10 months out at Spurs, after recovering from an ACL injury. Discussing the Dutchman’s condition, Howe said Botman ‘naturally’ felt a bit of fatigue in the closing stages of Saturday’s game.

“It’s a combination, we have to speak to the player, the medical team, the experts. They’ll give me some of the answers to what we do with him next. Sven is a competitor. He is hugely driven for the team and himself. He wants to do really well in his career so I’ve got no doubts what he will say, but we need to, as I said, speak to other people and try and come up with the right decision.

“He feels good, naturally a little bit of fatigue at the end. He has trained for a long, long time for this moment. It is not like he has been rushed back. Straight into action, he did very well, very pleased with him, he handled the intensity well.”
