Hugo Souza now third for most penalties saved in Corinthians history

On the night of Thursday (12th), Corinthians defeated Red Bull Bragantino 2-0 at the Neo Química Arena, in a match valid for the third round of the 2026 Brazilian Championship. The goals for the Alvinegro were scored by defender Gabriel Paulista and left-back Matheus Bidu. The victory placed the Corinthians team in 12th position with three points from two games.

The triumph was even more special for goalkeeper Hugo Souza, who saved his 11th penalty wearing the Corinthians shirt since he was signed in July 2024. The Alvinegro’s number 1 equaled Gylmar – who played for Timão between the 1950s and early 1960s – and became the third goalkeeper in the club’s history with the most penalty saves. He trails only Cássio and Ronaldo, with 32 and 27 penalty saves, respectively.

The penalty save happened at the 14th minute of the second half. The referee awarded the penalty after defender Gustavo Henrique allegedly blocked Isidro Pitta’s shot with his left arm. On the kick, the Paraguayan aimed for Hugo Souza’s left corner, but the goalkeeper made a beautiful save, deflecting the ball diagonally. Of the 11 penalties saved by the Alvinegro, four were against Massa Bruta.

In terms of average penalties saved, Hugo Souza is the best in Corinthians history, with 0.11 saves per match. He is followed by Dida, with 0.06; Cássio and Ronaldo Giovanelli, 0.04; and Gylmar dos Santos Neves, 0.02. Since joining Corinthians, the number 1 has played 99 matches, being decisive in the team’s surge in the 2024 Brasileirão (from the relegation zone to the Pre-Libertadores), as well as being a key player in winning the Paulistão and Copa do Brasil in 2025, and the 2026 Supercopa do Brasil.
