Chelsea head coach Sonia Bompastor has reiterated the club’s desire to win the UEFA Women’s Champions League and says that there is enough quality in the team to challenge for the silverware.

The Blues continue their pursuit of glory when they face Paris FC in the league phase at Stamford Bridge this evening.

Chelsea have never won the UEFA Women’s Champions League but Bompastor knows how important the competition is to the club and she believes that they can go far this season.

“We want to compete as far as we can in every competition that we are involved in,” Bompastor said when speaking in the pre-match press conference. “The Champions League is a special one because this is the biggest competition that you can play in as a club and it’s also the only trophy that is missing in this club. This is also the reason why it is so special for us.

“The competition is getting harder and harder. We just need to focus on ourselves and I know that we have the quality to go far in the competition. Hopefully, we will show that on the pitch [against Paris FC].”

Bompastor knows all about Paris FC’s qualities from her time back home in France and she has witnessed the club’s steady growth in recent years.

“I know Paris FC really well, I know the players and I know the coach and they’ve progressed really well,” Bompastor said. “They made a big decision this summer bringing in new investors and investing even more money. The project that they have there is really good for the women’s team and every year they are making progress.

“We are expecting them to be a strong side. When teams are coming and facing Chelsea, they have that extra motivation, so it will be a tough game. They have really good individuals and they play well as a team. We also have a good team and we are confident going into the game.”

Chelsea have struggled to kill off games in recent weeks but Bompastor is not overly concerned as she believes that the team’s mentality is in the right place.

She said “When I analyse the games, we are creating a lot which is the most important thing for me. If you look at the statistics from the latest games, they’re really good in terms of in-possession; we are bringing the ball high on the pitch and bringing the ball in different ways to the box. The most difficult thing in football is to score goals, so for me, we need to stay confident, we need to keep trying.

“One goal in the last game was enough, so it was good. Sometimes, it’s about being more clinical and killing the opposition’s hope a little sooner in the game. We did that in the West Ham game and when you are clinical, you are just in a better place. Even in the last game, we were confident enough to keep trying and working hard, keep creating situations and opportunities and we will find a way to score.

“For me, in this situation, it is more about having the right mentality to keep trying, keep working hard to make sure we put the ball in the net.”
