'I miss Liverpool': Departed fan favourite makes emotional admission

Last season big changes were made at Liverpool.

Arne Slot and Richard Hughes opted to clear out several members of the 2024/25 Premier League title-winning squad.

The club waved goodbye to Trent Alexander-Arnold, Luis Diaz and Darwin Nunez among others. And one big fan favourite who was permitted to leave is Caoimhin Kelleher.

The Irish No1 was only contracted until 2026 and without a guarantee of first-team football it was tough to see him sticking around or signing a new deal.

Brentford came forward with a bid of around £12m for Kelleher’s transfer and the 27-year-old has finally established himself as a first-choice Premier League goalkeeper.

Fans regret Kelleher sale

Liverpool brought in Giorgi Mamardashvili as a replacement behind Alisson Becker - who could well join Juventus this summer.

Reds fans meanwhile have been left to rue Kelleher’s sale - with the former academy star being a key fixture in the successes won under Jurgen Klopp and Arne Slot.

And now in an interview with the Athletic the Bees’ No1 claims he misses Liverpool as well as life on Merseyside.

'I miss Liverpool,' admits Kelleher

“Liverpool is a special place for me,” he said. “I lived in the city (centre) for five years and loved it there. I just miss the people at the club. I have a lot of good friends there. I miss them, and I miss the city and the Scousers.

“I think they are similar to the Irish. They’re quite funny. I do miss them.”

It’s very much a poignant moment for Liverpool supporters to read these words. Given his quality and experience many observers would have settled for Kelleher remaining at the club as second-choice until Alisson left before ultimately taking over.

But the Corkonian has gone in another direction - finally earning the first-team minutes he couldn’t get at Anfield. It’s probably too late to ever go back with Kelleher under contract at the Gtech Community Stadium until 2030.
