The International Football Association Board has unanimously approved a new sanction, a red card for players who cover their mouths to conceal discriminatory or insulting remarks during confrontations with opponents.
According to L'Équipe, the move is intended to curb hidden behaviour and stop exchanges that cannot be read by referees, broadcasters or lip-reading experts.
The decision follows recent controversies, notably the Champions League incident involving Gianluca Prestianni and Vinicius Jr, when the Benfica player spoke while masking his mouth. Gianni Infantino had raised the issue publicly, backing a strong response to racist insults and covert provocation.
IFAB also approved a further tightening, with players who voluntarily leave the pitch to protest a refereeing decision, or team officials who prompt them to do so, now liable to be sent off. The move referenced the AFCON final, when Senegal’s players left the field after a penalty was awarded to Morocco.
The changes are due to be applied at the 2026 World Cup in the United States, Canada and Mexico, from 11 June to 19 July.
