Inter Milan confirm pursuit of Tottenham captain Cristian Romero as Argentine eyes Serie A return | OneFootball

Inter Milan have confirmed that the club are interested in signing Tottenham Hotspur captain Cristian Romero.

Romero is keen to leave Tottenham this summer having expressed his unhappiness with the club's performances across the last two campaigns. Spurs have finished successive seasons 17th in thePremier League table, with Romero having been critical of the board.

In February, Romero said it was 'disgraceful' that the Spurs hierarchy had not made signings in January to help combat the club's injury issues.

Speaking after a draw with Bournemouth, he said: “I wanted to be available to help them even though I wasn’t feeling well, especially as we had only 11 players available – unbelievable but true and disgraceful.”

The Argentina international is now exploring his options with a return toSerie A an option. Romero spent time with Genoa, Juventus and Atalanta prior to his move to Tottenham, and leading clubs in Italy are keen to bring him back to the division.

Former club Juventus and Inter Milan have both made contact to discover Spurs' valuation, with Inter sporting director Piero Ausilo confirming the Italian champions are working on a deal.

"It's definitely a deal we are trying to sign with the player and the club [Tottenham]," he toldSky Italy.

"These things take some time but there's definitely interest. Let's see."

It's understood any transfer would be financially 'complex' for Inter but negotiations are ongoing. Spurs value Romero in excess of £45m, but are prepared to sanction his exit this summer.

The North Londoners have signed Jan Paul van Hecke and Marcos Senesi as centre-back options, with the duo set to compete with Kevin Danso and Micky van de Ven for a place in Roberto De Zerbi's side.

Spurs also sold Croatian centre-back prospect Luka Vuskovic to Brighton for a fee of £50m, following his loan return from Hamburg.
