Alessandro Bastoni received a powerful show of solidarity from Inter Milan supporters on Saturday, with the Curva Nord unveiling a banner at Appiano Gentile to remind the defender he is not alone during the most difficult period of his Inter career.

It is the second time this season the Curva have made a public gesture of support for Bastoni.

During the Inter vs Atalanta match, a previous banner declared him “our pride.”

The timing is significant.

Bastoni has endured weeks of intense scrutiny, first from the Kalulu incident in the Derby d’Italia, which has followed him to every away ground since in the form of hostile receptions from opposition supporters, and more recently from the red card he received playing for Italy against Bosnia in the World Cup play-off final.

Through it all, the Inter faithful have refused to turn on their defender.

For a player whose heart has always been at this club, and who is now at the centre of Barcelona’s summer pursuit, that unconditional backing from the stands may prove the most powerful argument for staying.

Chivu spoke about Bastoni with evident emotion at his pre-match press conference on Saturday.

The Curva’s message at training reinforces what the coach has been saying privately for weeks.

At Inter, Bastoni is loved, and that love does not come with conditions.
