Is Antoine Griezmann signing for Monterrey?

Rumors have been circulating this week that Monterrey are considering an audacious move to lure FIFA World Cup winner and Atlético Madrid forward, Antoine Griezmann, to join the club.

The story first came to light in the summer of 2025, but any sign of a move fizzled out with Los Rayados ending the transfer window by signing French international teammate, Anthony Martial.

In the months following Martial’s move to Mexico, the former Manchester United attacker has struggled to adapt to life in Nuevo León as he continues to wait for his first goal in the league.

As the Liga MX Clausura got underway this past weekend, with Monterrey losing on the opening weekend to Toluca, before a midweek victory over Necaxa, headlines continue to follow Martial, who has now gone 12 appearances without a goal in the blue and white colours.

When would this deal happen?

News around this deal indicates that it is most likely feasible in the summer of 2026. Griezmann has fallen down the Atléti pecking order, at the age of 34, starting five games from 19 for Los Rojiblancos.

His reduced playing time has led many to speculate an exit from Madrid. Although the player has previously expressed his desire to play in the United States (and is said to be a big fan of American football), a lucrative offer from a club 100 miles south of the border could work.

Monterrey’s history of big-name signings

Monterrey have become known for luring players from Spain, and Antoine Griezmann would only add to their portfolio.

The first of this pattern started two years ago when Sergio Canales put pen to paper on a move from Real Betis to join the club, paving the way for the Sevilla double of Óliver Torres and Lucas Ocampos before making the biggest signing of the club’s history when Sergio Ramos joined the club in January 2025.

Beyond Griezmann, the club have even been linked with Mexican winger Hirving “Chucky” Lozano. While a deal for the former PSV winger, and current San Diego designated player, it shows the power they have to sign big-name players.

What has been said about the deal?

Despite the undoubted excitement surrounding a potential move, Monterrey manager Doménec Torrent has subtly closed the door on a deal by stating that it is “impossible” for the club to sign the two-time La Liga champion.

Torrent went as far as to say a story of this nature is “crazy”, not because of the nature of the rumor, but because the team is unable to make space for more signings this summer following the acquisition of Cincinnati FC defender Luca Orellano.
