Manchester United Technical Director Jasox Wilcox pats himself on the back for the four signings he made in the summer, including Benjamin Sesko.
The Red Devils began their attacking overhaul by signing Matheus Cunha and Bryan Mbuemo, two established Premier League stars from Wolves and Brentford, respectively.
But while the Brazilian and the Cameroonian were at the top of INEOS’ wishlist, the same cannot be said about Sesko, as the club had missed out on several other centre-forwards before turning to the Slovenian in the final weeks of the summer transfer campaign. The list includes Liam Delap, Viktor Gyokeres, and Ollie Watkins.
The former RB Leipzig has been getting mixed reviews in his early months at Old Trafford. After all, his main task is to find the back of the net, but he has only managed to do so twice in his 11 appearances since joining Man Utd.
Gary Neville even slammed Sesko following his ‘awkward’ display in the 2-2 draw against Forest last weekend.
Nevertheless, Wilcox insists that the summer signing will come good for United, arguing that his hard work is making life easier for his fellow new signings up front.
“Benji, at the top end, he’s going to be an amazing player,” said the director in his interview with the official Man Utd website.
“It’s difficult to be the no.9 at United and I know sometimes that Matheus and Bryan are getting a lot of credit, but the runs that Benji is making are also helping Matheus and Bryan as well.
“All four of them (including the club’s fourth summer signing, Senne Lammens) have done really well, the summer signings from last year, they are top professionals.”
Sesko’s lack of goals has earned him unwanted comparisons with the man he replaced at Carrington, Rasmus Hojlund.
In fact, the Dane has been more clinical than the Slovenian this season, as he’s been enjoying a new lease on life at Napoli.
Nevertheless, it should be remembered that Sesko joined Ruben Amorim’s camp at a late stage in the summer, missing the bulk of the club’s pre-season preparations. Moreover, Wilcox certainly has a point when highlighting the difficulties that accompany leading the line for Man Utd, especially in the current era.
Sesko has already shown flashes of brilliance, and as long as he maintains the right attitude, the goals will start pouring sooner or later.
