Jean-Philippe Mateta has been named by Didier Deschamps in France’s 26 for the 2026 World Cup, which runs from 11 June to 19 July, and he reacted with emotion.
“It is a childhood dream, and I do not know how to explain it, it is strong, very strong,” he said, speaking to La chaîne L'Équipe.
The Crystal Palace striker was a mild surprise, preferred to Randal Kolo Muani, and claimed one of the final places a little over six months after his senior debut against Azerbaijan, a 3-0 win.
He broke into a broad smile as his name was read out during the announcement. His eyes were fixed on the screen and his meal was barely touched as the moment arrived.
“When I got injured, the only thing that concerned me was my return date. Once I knew when I would be back, in my head I was ready.”
