Jermain Defoe, 43, has been appointed head coach of Woking in England's fifth tier, launching his managerial career.

According to L'Équipe, the former England international made 57 appearances and scored 20 goals, and steps up after roles on the staff at Rangers and in Tottenham's academy.

The Premier League's 10th highest all-time scorer said Woking are a historic club with major potential and that he is delighted to join the project.

He takes over following an interim spell overseen by Craig Ross.

Woking sit 11th in a 24-team National League table.
