Flamengo are in active talks with West Ham over Lucas Paquetá, with José Boto saying there has been progress but the deal remains difficult, chiefly on finances.
"It is the first and last time I will speak about this. We really want Paquetá and he really wants to come. In negotiations there is always a third party and that third party is not very convinced about selling Paquetá. We have made significant progress, but it is a very difficult operation. The figures are high and he is a player at a very high level." He told GETV.
"We have to be patient when negotiating with West Ham. Every club in the world pays in instalments. We wanted Paquetá here already and we are working hard for him to come. The main obstacle is financial. The sums are high and we have already lowered them significantly. There is also the form of payment, he is a top player and it is not easy. But I am an optimist by nature."
Flamengo have held meetings with West Ham as they seek a positive outcome. Paquetá wants to return and has agreed contract details for a comeback.
The Brazilian side have offered 35 million euros, about R$ 217 million at current rates. West Ham continue to resist, with further talks expected in the coming days.
Meanwhile, the squad remain focused on the season. Flamengo face Vasco on Wednesday 21 January at the Maracanã in the third round of the Campeonato Carioca, kick-off 21:30 Brasília time.
