José Luis Morales ends Levante UD career after record-breaking spell

José Luis Morales has brought his Levante UD career to a close. The 38-year-old departs having played 377 games and scored 83 goals for the first team, and served as captain. He is not retiring and is considering options in Spain and abroad.
The club said in a statement that El Comandante leaves as a legend, the player with most appearances since the 1939 merger, the club’s top scorer in Primera and Segunda, and among the select group to win two promotions.
Morales joined Levante in 2011 for the reserves, shone through two promotion play-offs, then moved on loan to SD Eibar, where he won promotion to the top flight.
On returning to Orriols he became a key figure, took the armband and embodied the club’s values. After his contract ended he joined Villarreal CF, making his European debut in the UEFA Conference League and UEFA Europa League.
He rejoined Levante in 2024 with the clear aim of taking the team back up. The Ciutat de València celebrated his goals as he played a central role in an unforgettable promotion.
Reflecting on his journey, Morales has said that fulfilling his dream of becoming a professional with Levante was the best thing that could have happened to him. He leaves after 10 seasons with the first team and two with the reserves.
