José Mourinho has received a formal offer to renew with Benfica, delivered on Wednesday in a meeting between Rui Costa and Jorge Mendes. The coach confirmed on Friday that an extension has been proposed.
Although the document was only handed over this week, both Mendes and Mourinho had long been aware of the Benfica SAD’s intention to pursue a renewal. Record writes that the meeting between the Benfica president and the agent lasted several hours and also addressed planning for next season and potential transfer moves as the club begin preparing 2026/27.
The delay in arranging the meeting was linked to diary clashes, with Mendes’s professional commitments preventing an earlier sit-down with Rui Costa.
Mourinho has chosen to postpone any assessment of the proposal. Ahead of the Estoril Praia match, he asked his agent not to show him the document until the league campaign is over.
The Portuguese also pushed back on rumours linking him to Real Madrid, saying there has been no contact with the club, its president or any senior figure.
