Liverpool’s long term goalkeeping picture has come into sharper focus, with Giorgi Mamardashvili weighing up his options ahead of the summer window. The Georgia international arrived at Anfield in a deal worth £24m in 2024, viewed internally as a key part of the club’s succession planning.
However, developments since then have altered the landscape, leaving Mamardashvili facing an uncertain role under Arne Slot despite Liverpool’s domestic success.
Mamardashvili returned to Liverpool after a loan spell with Valencia, where he had continued his development in LaLiga. The expectation was clear, he would compete to become Liverpool’s number one.
That has not materialised. Alisson Becker remains firmly established as first choice when fit, with Mamardashvili restricted largely to appearances during injury enforced absences.
Liverpool’s decision to extend Alisson’s contract has only reinforced that hierarchy. It effectively signals continuity in goal, leaving Mamardashvili with reduced prospects of consistent minutes in the short term.
For a player entering a key phase of his career at 25, regular football is understood to be a priority.

Atletico Madrid are among the clubs tracking Mamardashvili’s situation closely. The Spanish side are assessing goalkeeping options amid uncertainty surrounding Jan Oblak, whose recent injury issues have prompted internal discussions.
Reports from Alex Silvestre on El Chiringuito de Jugones indicate that Atletico’s recruitment team, led by Mateu Alemany, have identified Mamardashvili as a viable candidate. His familiarity with LaLiga and proven ability at that level are viewed as significant advantages.
Liverpool are aware of the interest, with early indications suggesting any move would likely be structured as a loan, aligning with both clubs’ financial frameworks.
Mamardashvili’s position appears increasingly clear.
“In the shadow of Alisson Becker, his opportunities have been limited, a situation that has sparked his interest in seeking quality playing time elsewhere,” the report reads.
“His willingness to go out on loan for the 2026/27 season would facilitate a move that fits within the club’s financial strategy.”
Those close to the situation suggest the goalkeeper is open to a temporary departure if it guarantees regular starts, a key factor in maintaining his international standing and continued progression.
Despite the growing speculation, Liverpool are expected to rely on Mamardashvili in the immediate term. Alisson is currently sidelined with a hamstring injury, which could keep him out until the closing stages of the season.
That absence provides Mamardashvili with an opportunity to build momentum and demonstrate his credentials within Slot’s system. Performances in this period may yet influence Liverpool’s final decision on his future.
There is also wider interest across Europe, with multiple clubs monitoring developments. Liverpool, for their part, retain control of the situation and are not under pressure to sanction a permanent exit.
What remains clear is that Giorgi Mamardashvili’s next step will be shaped by one central factor, regular football. Whether that comes at Liverpool or elsewhere will become clearer in the months ahead.
