Julian Brandt has opted to join Ajax on a three-year contract, ending Leeds United’s pursuit of the Germany international this summer. The 30-year-old was a free agent after leaving Borussia Dortmund.

The club said in a statement that Brandt arrived on a free transfer and signed a deal effective immediately, running until 30 June 2029. It noted he spent the past seven seasons with Dortmund and previously six at Bayer Leverkusen, and has 48 Germany caps.

Leeds made an offer and his father Jurgen Brandt visited Thorp Arch for talks with club officials. The midfielder had opportunities elsewhere and has now committed to Ajax.

Following months of talks, the move was presented as bringing in a top-level international with a strong mentality who will add quality to the squad.

Leeds have been assessing alternative attacking targets since failing to land Brandt before their pre-season tour of the USA. Marseille forward Igor Paixão, a target last summer, is among those under consideration.
