Kalvin Phillips is finalising a season-long return to Sheffield United, with Chris Wilder keen on a reunion despite recent injuries, according to the Daily Mail.

The midfielder was left out of Enzo Maresca’s 28-man Manchester City squad for a pre-season tour of Asia on Tuesday, a fresh indication of his standing at the Etihad.

Phillips joined the Blades for the second half of last season but made only three appearances. His final outing brought a red card against Sheffield Wednesday, and a knee injury in that match required surgery, effectively ending the loan.

The 30-year-old has two years remaining on the six-year contract he signed when moving from Leeds to City in 2022, yet he has no future at the club. Before January he featured for only eight minutes all season, in a 3-0 Carabao Cup win over Huddersfield Town, and across four years he has started just two Premier League games. Top-flight loans at Ipswich Town and West Ham underwhelmed amid injury and rust.

Earlier this summer, The Star reported that Phillips would be open to returning to Bramall Lane, with family proximity a factor. He was also credited with aiding young midfielders Oliver Arblaster, 22, and Sydie Peck, 21.

A move back would reunite the Leeds promotion winner with former Elland Road team-mate Patrick Bamford, who joined the Blades as a free agent last year and signed an 18-month deal in January.
