Wolves are poised to make Kieran Trippier their first summer arrival, with the defender scheduled for a medical next week as the move is finalised.
According to ExpressAndStar.com, Wolves opened talks last month after his Newcastle exit at the end of his contract. Head coach Rob Edwards and chairman Nathan Shi led the push to sell the project, and Trippier told the club last week he wanted to join.
A two-year deal has been agreed, with an option of a third, for the 35-year-old who turns 36 in September. He is set to complete checks and sign on returning from his post-season break.
Trippier is expected to compete with Pedro Lima for the right-back role, with the 19-year-old Brazilian also set to learn from his experience.
Lima was recalled from his loan at Porto in January. Despite several offers, including from Championship clubs, Edwards kept him with the first team and handed him 10 appearances in the second half of the season.
That included Premier League starts against Spurs, Sunderland and Brighton towards the end of the campaign.
Edwards has outlined a switch to a back four next season. Trippier and Lima are expected to be the senior right-back options, with Jackson Tchatchoua and Ki-Jana Hoever likely to depart and Rodrigo Gomes expected to play further forward.
The prospective signing has been welcomed by most fans, who value Trippier’s experience and leadership during a planned summer rebuild.
