We’re delighted to announce that Rebecca Knaak has signed a two-year contract extension at Manchester City.

It means the German international has now committed her future to the Club until the summer of 2028.

A January 2025 signing, the 29-year-old joined City after three trophy-laden years with FC Rosengard and, so far, she’s featured 16 times and already has five goals to her name, three of which have come in as many Manchester derby appearances.

Knaak’s performances for the Blues have also earned international recognition, with the defender making her senior debut for Germany in February 2025, before helping her nation reach the semi-finals of Euro 2025.

The defender missed the opening months of the season with an injury sustained at the tournament but has returned to help City earn three successive clean sheets in our last three games.

Speaking about the extension, Rebecca said: “I’m really happy to stay here. It’s the club I love and the club I want to be successful at, and I’m really happy to be here for another two years.

“Personally, I have so much unfinished business to be done, and I love this football club. It feels like home to me now and I feel this is where I belong and I’m meant to be.”

Manchester City Women Director of Football, Therese Sjogran, added: “We’re delighted that Rebecca has decided to extend her stay at the Club. After working with her in Sweden I was confident she would thrive in the WSL, and she’s had a brilliant first year at City.

“Her attitude is first class, so it’s no surprise how well she has settled here, and her achievements with Germany are just rewards for all the effort she puts in on and off the pitch.

“I know Rebecca is excited to achieve lots of things over the next few years in Manchester, and she’ll be an important figure for us not just this season but in the future as well.”

Dominant centre-half

It was perhaps no surprise that Therese Sjogran’s first signing as City’s Director of Football was a player who’d helped to bring so much success to her previous club.

Knaak joined City on New Year’s Day 2025 after winning two league titles and a domestic cup in just three years at FC Rosengard.

A powerful centre-half, dominant in both boxes, coming to Manchester on the back of scoring 12 goals and winning Damallsvenskan Defender of the Year in 2024, Sjogran was confident the German had the qualities necessary to thrive in the WSL.

And thrive is exactly what Knaak has done, and in a league which can be a notoriously tough nut to crack.

Within a month, Rebecca had earned her first senior Germany call-up, and she finished the 2024/25 campaign with four goals in 12 appearances after immediately cementing herself in City’s starting line-up.

Knaak had to sit out the start of the current campaign due to a knee injury sustained at Euro 2025 but picked up where she left off after returning for a 2-1 win over Everton.

In the German’s four appearances this season, City have kept three clean sheets. She also added to her goal tally with the opener against Manchester United at the Etihad Stadium, her third in as many games against our local rivals.

The centre-half is one of the WSL’s most imposing aerial players, whether it’s clearing a ball in our box or causing havoc in our opponent’s, but her game is about so much more than her heading ability.

Knaak is also a supremely composed defender, with excellent game intelligence and a remarkably consistent diagonal pass out to the flank, often the spark for a City attack this season.

She’s every inch the City defender, a powerful figure who can dominate an opposition attacker, but also possessing a deft technical ability to then create once she’s won the ball back.

It’s been a special 12 months for the defender, and another equally memorable two years at City beckon after Knaak’s commitment to the summer of 2028.
