Lazio received delightful news on Saturday as the injury scare to Edoardo Motta turned out to be a false alarm.
The 21-year-old joined the Biancocelesti in January as a replacement for Christos Mandas, who headed to Bournemouth. The Juventus youth product sealed a permanent transfer from Reggiana, but he wasn’t expected to play an integral role this season.
However, Ivan Provedel’s campaign ended prematurely after suffering a serious shoulder injury earlier this month, so Motta was thrust into the action. The youngster passed his first three tests with flying colors, helping Lazio put together a three-match winning streak. He also registered back-to-back clean sheets against AC Milan and Bologna.
At the start of the international break, Motta was called up by Italy U21, but was nowhere to be seen during the 4-0 win over North Macedonia on Thursday. The following day, the national team announced that the Lazio youngster was struggling with a physical issue, which prompted the decision to send him back to Formello.
Motta’s condition caused some anxiety at Lazio, especially with Provedel already unavailable. But luckily for the Aquile, this turned out to be a false alarm.
According to Il Tempo (via La Lazio Siamo Noi), the young custodian had only suffered a minor bruise during the victory over Milan, so the decision to send him back to the club was precautionary, as he’s only considered a back-up to Frosinone’s Lorenzo Palmisani with the Azzurrini.
Therefore, Motta should be available at Maurizio Sarri’s disposal once Lazio resume action after the international break. The Biancocelesti’s next contest is a home fixture against Parma on April 4.
