Nicolo Rovella underwent surgery on Monday afternoon after fracturing his collarbone in Cagliari. The club said in a statement that the operation on his right clavicle was a success, and that he will begin a specific rehabilitation programme under medical supervision in the coming days.
The injury occurred in the second half when Cagliari right-back Ze Pedro fouled the midfielder, and an awkward fall caused the break. Back in Rome, clinical tests confirmed a severe injury that required surgery.
The 24-year-old had already missed almost four months with a groin issue that required surgery earlier in the season. The setback came on the day Rovella made his first Serie A start since September.
No recovery timetable was provided in the statement. Estimates have ranged between 60 and 90 days.
Factoring in the time needed for athletic readjustment, many believe the Genoa youth product is unlikely to make a prominent contribution for the remainder of the campaign.
