Manchester United began their Women’s Champions League campaign with a 1–0 victory over Valerenga at Leigh Sports Village, courtesy of a first-half penalty from captain Maya Le Tissier.
Marc Skinner’s side dominated for long spells and created a series of chances but were made to wait until the 31st minute to break through, when Le Tissier calmly converted from the spot after Arna Eiríksdottir was adjudged to have handled inside the box.
United had started brightly and might have taken the lead inside a minute, with Elisabeth Terland heading wide from close range. Hinata Miyazawa also went close from distance, while Melvine Malard forced goalkeeper Tove Enblom into a strong save, before Michaela Kovacs cleared Terland’s rebound off the line.
The visitors rarely threatened but almost snatched an equaliser late on when substitute Elise Thorsnes broke clear, only to send her shot wide of the far post.
The result gives United a positive start to the new league-phase format. Skinner’s side will next travel to Spain to face Atletico as they continue their maiden European campaign.
