Leeds United supporters have faced criticism after boos were heard during a Ramadan fast break pause in the match against Manchester City at Elland Road.
According to Sunderland Echo, the game was briefly halted to allow visiting players to break their fast, with a message shown on the big screen and some home fans booing.
The stoppage came in the 11th minute. Play then resumed and Manchester City won 1-0, Antoine Semenyo scoring in the 47th minute.
Pep Guardiola said the incident underlined the need to respect religion and diversity, noting that the Premier League allows a short pause for fasting and that his team followed that guidance.
Anti-discrimination charity Kick It Out described the reaction as massively disappointing and said Ramadan pauses have been an established protocol for several years. The group added that football still has a long way to go on education and acceptance.
Leeds declined to comment after the game, although assistant manager Eddie Riemer, standing in after Daniel Farke’s late red card, said he was disappointed if it happened and that they would try to learn from it. The Football Association has also been approached for comment.
