Leeds United supporters serenaded Georginio Rutter on his first Elland Road return since his move to Brighton last summer, as Daniel Farke’s side clinched a late 1-0 win on Sunday. Dominic Calvert-Lewin settled it with a header, leaving the visitors empty handed.
Leedsunited.news reports that fans sang at the French forward as he warmed up in the first half, before he was introduced after 65 minutes. The defeat dents Brighton’s European hopes.
The welcome was notable given Rutter departed after helping Leeds reach the Championship play-off final in 2023-24. He faced them earlier this season, registering an assist, and applauded the Leeds support at the Amex after full time.
Signed in January 2023 during a Premier League relegation fight, Rutter initially struggled to justify a club-record fee and did not score in the second half of 2022-23 as Leeds went down. Under Farke he rebuilt his reputation, becoming a key attacker with eight goals and 18 assists in 66 games.
Brighton moved in summer 2024, paying £40m to give the 23-year-old another Premier League opportunity. He has contributed goals and assists while featuring regularly for Fabian Hurzeler and kept ties with Leeds, including a post-match Instagram photo with Farke after Brighton’s win earlier this season.
Rutter has also spoken warmly about Leeds, saying they deserve to be at the top, praising the atmosphere and admitting he still follows them closely. Those sentiments, and his impact last season, help explain why Elland Road chose to serenade rather than criticise on his return.
