Leeds United have released their 2026-27 retained list and the standout development is Sam Byram entering contract talks despite limited action last season.
According to Leedsunited.news, only two first-team exits were confirmed, Illan Meslier leaves on a free and Facundo Buonanotte returns to Brighton after a poor loan. Leeds are in discussions to extend the deals of Karl Darlow, Byram and Alex Cairns, with Darlow linked to Manchester United and Tottenham.
There had been little indication Byram would figure beyond his current terms. The 32-year-old made just five appearances in all competitions and was on the fringes of Daniel Farke’s squad during the club’s Premier League return, a sharp contrast to the previous two years.
Byram rejoined on trial in 2023 and became an important contributor, helping deliver promotion. He has spoken about wanting to finish the job at Leeds, believing he has a few more years ahead, aiming to play regularly if possible after long spells with injuries, and feeling in his best physical condition.
Many therefore assumed an exit was on the cards. Farke has long trusted Byram and his versatility and experience could be useful next season, and the homegrown element may carry value, though Leeds have not stated any reason for the talks.
What looked a straightforward call has shifted. A few weeks ago his departure felt close to inevitable, now a new deal is in play, even if whether that matches his wish for regular minutes remains unclear.
