Norway’s Prime Minister, Jonas Gahr Store, a Leeds United supporter, posted a brave message after his country’s World Cup quarter-final defeat to England.
Thomas Tuchel’s England reached the semi-finals with a 2-1 extra-time win in Miami, Jude Bellingham scoring both goals. In an Instagram post, Store said: “Thank you Norway! The World Cup adventure is over, but the pride bigger than ever. A brave national team that showed that almost anything is possible, giving us unforgettable moments, world-class gameplay and a community that brought the whole world together.”
Leeds have a large following in Norway and across Scandinavia, a legacy of Don Revie’s glory years, and Store counts himself among the Whites support.
Like many Leeds and Norway fans, he had been quietly confident before Saturday evening’s tie.
The result brought disappointment for many Leeds followers in Norway, tempered by the pride expressed by their Prime Minister.
