Leeds United-supporting Norway prime minister Jonas Gahr Store issued a proud message after the World Cup quarter-final defeat to England, who won 2-1 after extra time in Miami thanks to a Jude Bellingham brace to reach the semi-finals.

Store said in an Instagram post that he thanked Norway, noted the campaign was over but said pride was greater than ever, and praised a brave national team that showed almost anything could be achieved, delivering unforgettable moments, world-class play and a community spirit felt around the world.

Like many Leeds and Norway supporters, Store had been quietly confident before the tie against Thomas Tuchel’s Three Lions.

Leeds have a sizeable following in Norway and across Scandinavia, a bond that traces back to Don Revie’s glory years. Store is among those who back the Whites.

The defeat brought disappointment for many Leeds fans in the region, tempered by the prime minister’s emphasis on pride in the team’s efforts.
