Leeds United might have solved one of their final transfer priorities without spending another penny. According to The Leeds Press, Jayden Lienou’s impressive pre-season has left Daniel Farke seriously considering promoting the 18-year-old instead of signing another specialist left-back before the window closes.

Leeds United could avoid another left-back signing

Gabriel Gudmundsson remains the first-choice option despite attracting interest from Chelsea earlier this year. Behind him, though, the picture has looked far less convincing. James Justin filled several defensive roles last season, yet Leeds still wanted genuine cover on the left. That search may have taken an unexpected turn.

Lienou, who arrived after spells in the Everton and Manchester City academies, has handled senior pre-season football with remarkable composure. He has looked comfortable receiving possession under pressure, picked progressive passes with confidence and shown the calm decision-making coaches want from a modern full-back.

The Leeds Press adds that Farke values his tactical flexibility. Lienou can tuck into midfield during build-up play or drive beyond the winger to stretch opposing defences. That versatility carries real value during a summer in which Leeds have already signed Harry Wilson and Tarik Muharemovic while pushing to complete a club-record move for goalkeeper James Trafford. Promoting from within would save significant money in transfer fees and wages.

Excitement is understandable. So is caution.

During the 2025/26 campaign, Lienou featured 26 times for Leeds United Under-21s across Premier League 2, the EFL Trophy and the National League Cup, playing 1,646 minutes and registering one assist. His steady displays earned places on the senior bench against Tottenham Hotspur and Brighton, while Wales manager Craig Bellamy handed him his first senior international call-up before the friendly against Ghana. Leeds United have since rewarded him with a new contract running until 2029.

His profile suits Farke’s football. Lienou likes to play on the front foot, carries the ball confidently and delivers natural width from the left, giving attacking players greater freedom to move inside. He already looks comfortable building attacks instead of simply clearing danger.

Leeds United still need proven competition

Pre-season can create excitement, though league football asks far tougher questions. An 18-year-old with no senior competitive appearances will still make mistakes, especially when defending crosses, managing physical forwards and reading danger inside his own penalty area.

Leeds United shouldn’t abandon the market simply because Lienou has impressed in July. Signing an experienced deputy for Gabriel Gudmundsson would protect both the squad and the teenager’s development. Give Lienou meaningful minutes, trust him in selected matches and let him earn his place naturally rather than asking him to carry a position before he has even played a competitive senior game.
