Leeds United promotion hero Pablo Hernandez is recovering in hospital after his condition worsened slightly following kidney stone surgery.

The club said in a statement that he had surgery on Sunday, then, despite the procedure, led a 3-1 win over CD Mirandés on Monday, before being readmitted on Tuesday as a precaution. It added he is progressing and remains under medical supervision.

Assistant coach Sergi Ripollés will handle media duties for Sunday’s trip to Cádiz, having stepped in last week. Hernandez’s presence at the game will depend on how he recovers in the coming hours.

The Spaniard is manager of second tier CD Castellón, who are fourth after a seven-game unbeaten run and five straight wins.

He moved up from the B team to take the first team on an interim basis, then was made permanent until the end of the season. Since that appointment, Castellón have not dropped a point and are five points off LaLiga 2 leaders Racing.
