Leeds United have stepped up their pursuit of Shea Charles, with a fresh offer following last month’s unsuccessful £20m opening bid and talks understood to be ongoing amid interest from Crystal Palace.

The Daily Mail reports that Elland Road chiefs have submitted an initial £23m plus add-ons. Southampton value the midfielder at £30m, and Leeds hope performance-related payments can close the gap, which would imply add-ons below £7m, though no exact figure is stated.

Southampton’s stance is influenced by a sell-on clause from Charles’ 2023 move from Manchester City. The £15m deal included City receiving 15 per cent of any future sale, while a buyback right allows them to match any accepted bid. It is unclear whether the 15 per cent applies to the full fee or any profit, but a notable slice would need to be passed on.

A second, increased bid underlines Leeds’ intent to strengthen Daniel Farke’s midfield options.

Charles, 22, is a Northern Ireland international with three years at Southampton bringing 106 Championship appearances, 43 of them while on loan at Sheffield Wednesday.
