Leicester City were officially relegated on Sunday with a 1-0 loss at home to Liverpool

Leicester City have shortlisted Sheffield Wednesday boss Danny Rohl, former England interim manager Lee Carsley and Russell Martin as potential candidates to replace Ruud van Nistelrooy this summer.

According to Sky Sports reporter Rob Dorsett, three names have been drawn up ahead of upcoming talks this week with the Dutchman over his future with the club.

Van Nistelrooy replaced Steve Cooper in November, but has been unable to turn things around and avoid relegation from the Premier League.

Leicester had their place in the bottom three confirmed last Sunday with a 1-0 loss at home to champions-elect Liverpool, meaning they will return to the Championship after just one year away.

Dorsett has also reported that Van Nistelrooy is unlikely to remain in charge at Leicester beyond this season, with five games remaining in the campaign.

It’s believed that the ex-Man United striker will not just walk away, however, as he looks to receive compensation in any departure from the club.

This means he is likely to oversee the final few games of the campaign, as dismissing him will make things tricky for Leicester’s position when it comes to profit & sustainability regulations (PSR).

It has been reported by The Athletic that the EFL are likely wanting to impose sanctions on the Foxes following the result of an arbitration process that is currently ongoing, based on their three-year financial losses between 2020 and 2023.

This could leave Leicester at risk of a possible points deduction, so they will have to be wary of their financial position this fiscal year.

It's also been claimed that along with Sheffield Wednesday head coach Rohl, who the Daily Mail claimed was already a target earlier on in the month, former Southampton boss Russell Martin is also on their radar.

The former Scotland international defender was sacked by the Saints earlier on in the season after his style of play failed to bring top flight results, and he's currently looking for his next job after passing through MK Dons and Swansea City earlier in his career.

Carsley is another name that is on Leicester's potential shortlist, having taken charge of six England matches last year following Gareth Southgate's departure - five of them victories.

The 51-year-old has since returned to his role as the Three Lions' under-21's boss, but he could be set for a return to club management, with his only experience of that being 10 games with Brentford in 2015 with a further three at Birmingham City two years later.

The appointment of Van Nistelrooy hasn’t worked out for Leicester, and it would be surprising if he did stay on at the club.

The team’s terrible record in front of goal, failing to score at home in each of their last nine fixtures at the King Power Stadium, highlights that a change is needed.

It remains to be seen who will be next, but it’s clear that the club’s spending power won’t be as strong as many might expect from a former Premier League side.

They will have to be cautious of the financial rules again, which could also lead to major player sales in order to balance the books - it would be best for all concerned if a new head coach were to arrive to try and steer them back to the top flight.
