Leicester handed John Souttar hint as Russell Martin rebuild continues | OneFootball

Leicester City have been handed a potential transfer hint over John Souttar after the Scotland defender was left out of Rangers’ opening league match at Dundee United.

RangersReview reports that Russell Martin is keen on a reunion with a player he managed during his short spell with Rangers, and that talks are continuing, with Leicester and Swansea City the two main contenders.

Souttar was also omitted from the squad that travelled to Spain for a pre-season camp earlier in the summer after returning from representing Scotland at the World Cup, despite manager Derek McInnes having said he has been training.

Before the game, McInnes suggested he expects the defender to move on. He said he had spoken with technical director Dan Purdy and the recruitment team that morning but was unsure where things stood, adding that Souttar has trained well, may have one or two options, and might seek regular football elsewhere if the right opportunity arises.

If City do strike a deal, Souttar could link up with his brother, Harry, who remains at the club. The Australian international has been heavily linked with a summer exit, with Sheffield United named as a possible destination by Chris Wilder.

Martin’s rebuild continued on Friday as forward Liam Cullen arrived permanently from Swansea, becoming the fourth signing after free transfers Conor Chaplin and Alex McCarthy, and the season-long loan of Christian McFarlane from Manchester City. City are also reported to have agreed a loan with Brighton and Hove Albion for winger Tommy Watson. Their first competitive match is next Saturday against Northampton Town in the Carabao Cup first round.
