Union Saint-Gilloise could hardly have wished for a better Champions League debut, securing a memorable win away at PSV Eindhoven.

Promise David made history by becoming the Belgian club’s first-ever goalscorer in the competition, keeping his composure from the penalty spot to beat Matej Ková?.

Anouar Ait El Hadj doubled the advantage shortly before half-time with a superb solo run and finish that stunned the Philips Stadion.

Late on, Kevin Mac Allister - brother of Liverpool midfielder Alexis - bundled in a third from a corner to cap a night to remember for Union.

PSV grabbed a consolation in stoppage time through Ruben van Bommel, who stabbed home from close range. That strike, however, carried significance well beyond the scoreline: it placed him in a rare group of Champions League goalscorers whose fathers had also found the net in the competition (since the 1992/93 rebrand).

Van Bommel became the 10th player to achieve the feat, following in the footsteps of names such as Marcus Thuram (son of Lilian), Francisco Conceição (son of Sérgio), Timothy Weah (son of George), Nico González (son of Fran), Federico Chiesa (son of Enrico), Justin Kluivert (son of Patrick) and Luka Zahovic (son of Zlatko).

Only two fathers have seen two of their sons score in the Champions League: Diego Simeone (Giuliano and Giovanni) and Abedi Pelé (André and Jordan Ayew).

Ruben’s late goal means he and his father Mark van Bommel are now part of this exclusive family tradition in Europe’s premier competition.
