Liverpool’s ongoing rebuild under Arne Slot is expected to prioritise midfield reinforcements, and on Anfield Index’s Media Matters, Dave Davis and David Lynch discussed links to Brighton’s Carlos Baleba.
While not the most advanced rumour, the conversation offered insight into how Liverpool may approach the market and what qualities they are looking to add.
Dave Davis raised the Brighton midfielder as a name “coming up quite a bit recently”, placing him among potential options as Liverpool consider reshaping their midfield.
David Lynch, however, was quick to clarify his own position on the speculation. “I can’t say I have [heard anything] personally, to be honest,” he said, admitting he had not heard anything concrete linking Liverpool to Baleba at this stage.
That cautious response reflects Liverpool’s broader recruitment approach, where multiple profiles are assessed without every link progressing into a serious pursuit.
Although he stopped short of confirming interest, Lynch did outline the type of midfielder Liverpool require, and his comments align with what Baleba could potentially offer.
“If he brings physicality at all, then that would be quite a good thing,” Lynch said, identifying a clear gap in Liverpool’s current midfield setup. He added, “I think that’s something that’s kind of lacking in that midfield.”
This focus on physical presence is notable. Throughout the podcast, Liverpool’s issues were repeatedly linked to being overrun in games, struggling to control transitions and lacking robustness in key areas.
The discussion also touched on how Liverpool might create space for new arrivals. Lynch suggested that changes in midfield personnel are likely.
“I’d be surprised if Curtis Jones sticks around,” he said, hinting that outgoings could open the door for additions like Baleba or similar profiles.
This reinforces the idea that Liverpool’s interest in players such as the Brighton midfielder is part of a wider reshaping process, rather than a standalone move.

Overall, the Anfield Index conversation positioned Carlos Baleba as a potential fit stylistically, even if links remain tentative.
Lynch was careful not to overstate the situation, reiterating, “That’s not to say that he’s not someone they’re looking at,” but maintaining that he had no direct information on a deal progressing.
For Liverpool, the key takeaway is less about one specific target and more about the profile required. Physicality, presence and balance in midfield are priorities, and any move for Baleba would need to align with that vision.
As Liverpool prepare for a crucial summer under Arne Slot, players like Carlos Baleba represent the type of solution being considered, even if the pursuit is still at an early stage.
