Andrew Robertson’s final game for Liverpool is upon us.
The vice-captain will leave Anfield at the end of the season when his current deal expires, after spending close to a decade at the club.
With his final match for the Reds just days away, Robertson is yet to announce where he will play his football next season.
Tottenham Hotspur are believed to be favourites, but the London club cannot begin negotiations until the left-back is a free agent.
Now, a shock contender from Europe has entered the battle for the veteran fullback, and they can agree a deal before June 30th unlike Spurs.
After Spurs’ failed move for Robertson in the winter window, many assumed that the groundwork had been done and the 32-year-old would be joining the North London outfit for free.
There is some truth to this, in that Tottenham are still interested in the Scotland captain, but now interest from Europe could throw a spanner in the works.
According to Spanish outlet Fichajes, Turkish Super Lig side Fenerbahçe are contenders for Robertson’s signature, and they are willing to take an aggressive approach to get a deal done.
With Spurs unable to officially negotiate until Robertson’s deal has actually expired, Fenerbahçe have an unopposed run to convince the left-back to make the move to Turkey.
The report states that Robertson is keeping his options open and is yet to decide where he will play next season.
Fenerbahçe may be able to offer the Scot European football, if they make it through the Champions League qualifiers, but Spurs are already out of the running for a European place.
Tottenham’s move also relies on them avoiding relegation, although this looks almost certain now, so there is a chance the Turkish side become a more appealing destination.
Wherever Robertson ends up, Liverpool supporters will no doubt wish him all the best in the next step of his career.
