Lucas Paquetá will sign a five-year contract with Flamengo after a 42 million euro fee, making him the most expensive transfer in Brazilian football history.

According to Marca, the Brasileirão has become an unexpected force in the market, with clubs not only selling for vast sums but also spending at unprecedented levels, helping make Brazilian sides dominant in the Libertadores. It said Flamengo under Filipe Luís lead the way and have broken the bank for Paquetá from West Ham, describing the deal as high quality and aligned with their aim of repeating last season’s success.

Paquetá is due to arrive in Rio de Janeiro on Thursday, 29 January. He is Flamengo’s third signing for the 2026 season.

The deal is valued at R$ 260 million, with part of the fee paid upfront and the remainder in instalments through 2028.

The previous record belonged to Gerson’s 27 million euro move from Zenit to Cruzeiro, around R$ 169 million.

Flamengo now prepare to face São Paulo at MorumBIS at 21:30 Brasília time in the opening round of the Brasileirão.
