Tomás Araújo’s World Cup call-up sparked celebrations in Famalicão, as the Benfica defender’s family reacted when Roberto Martínez named Portugal’s squad.

"The moment I heard his name, it was an explosion of joy. It was one of his big objectives after so many years," said his father, Manuel Araújo, speaking to Record.

Relatives, friends and neighbours joined the gathering at the family home. "When his name appeared, it was madness, an explosion of emotions among us and the friends who were here," said his mother, Idalina.

With his place at the World Cup now secured, the family are already dreaming of following him. "I would love to go to the United States to see a game," his mother added.

This season for Benfica, Tomás Araújo made 39 competitive appearances, 23 in the Liga Portugal Betclic, nine in the Champions League, four in the Taça de Portugal, two in the Taça da Liga and one in the Liga Portugal Meu Super.

Across 2,795 minutes he registered one goal and two assists, and is valued at €28 million.
