Rio Ferdinand is convinced Victor Osimhen ‘would 100% come’ to Manchester United amid fresh reports linking the Red Devils with the Galatasaray striker, while director of football Jason Wilcox is set to green-light one transfer requirement made by interim boss Michael Carrick, according to a report.
Manchester United began a new era with a hugely promising 2-0 victory over noisy neighbours Manchester City on Saturday lunchtime, thanks to goals from Bryan Mbeumo and Patrick Dorgu, with the result lifting them to fourth in the Premier League table. The result enhances Carrick chances of helping secure the club a place in the top four and a return to the Champions League next season.
Securing a return to Europe’s top table would strengthen both Carrick’s chances of securing the job permanently – sources have revealed that is the 44-year-old’s target – while also solidifying the club’s spending power this summer, as well as the ability to attract top names to Old Trafford.
Ferdinand is convinced that one of those should be Nigeria hotshot Osimhen, who has struck an impressive 49 goals in 57 appearances since moving to the Turkish club.
Aware of fresh links with United for the 27-year-old, it’s reported that Gala have slapped a prohibitive €140m (£121m, $162m) price on Osimhen.
However, Ferdinand is convinced that any sort of approach by United for the player will see the move get a major green light, by the player at least.
Chatting to former Sunderland striker Asamoah Gyan on the Rio Ferdinand Presents YouTube channel, Ferdinand insisted that Osimhen would jump at the chance to play for United if they offered him the chance.
“Victor Osimhen, he loves scoring goals, he plays with his heart, and gives everything. I’m surprised big clubs didn’t go for him in this transfer window. Hopefully, I’m feeling Manchester United too, only if he wants to come because of their history and everything,” Gyan said.
Ferdinand then responded, “Osimhen will come to United, if United offer to take Osimhen, he would go, 100%.”
“That is the type of striker we need right now, we have Mbeumo on the side doing what he needs to do,” Gyan then added in conclusion.
While a move for Osimhen is not on the agenda this month, United do look set to make a surprise plunge into the transfer market to accommodate one Carrick transfer wish.
Switching to a 4-3-3 upon his appointment at Old Trafford – a refreshing change from Ruben Amorim’s far too predictable and often unsuited 3-4-2-1 formation – United appear to lack an obvious option to start on the left side of their attack.
That was perhaps illustrated by the fact that left-back Dorgu was selected to start Saturday’s derby there, though the Denmark international did respond by scoring his side’s second goal, vindicating Carrick’s decision to select him.
However, the United caretaker boss has made it clear he wants another option to play there over the remainder of the season, with neither Dorgu nor Matheus Cunha, who started there in the exit to Brighton in the FA Cup, seen as natural options.
As a result, it’s now reported that Wilcox will look into a potential signing of a left winger this month, although any addition is likely to come via the loan market only.
Amorim held talks over a deal for the £65m transfer of Antoine Semenyo, prior to the winger’s move to Manchester City earlier this month. And while United are not prepared to spend that on an alternative, seeing the then-Bournemouth as a unique opportunity not to be missed, they will sanction one addition if terms are deemed reasonable.
Per Football Insider, the Red Devils are ready to ‘accelerate plans to land a new signing, preferably on loan given their financial situation, before the window closes’.
United are, of course, also looking to sign a new midfielder this summer, with the club looking to move veteran star Casemiro on at the end of his contract this summer.
To that end, we have consistently reported on the club’s desire to bring in Nottingham Forest’s Elliot Anderson – interest which has not faded in the result of Amorim’s dismissal.
However, TEAMtalk has learned that Manchester City are determined to make the England international midfielder their next big acquisition after Semenyo and Marc Guehi this month – and there is a growing feeling a deal is there to be done with the Tricky Trees’ asking price emerging.
Elsewhere, United have been given hope that a big-money deal for a Danish midfielder could be on the cards, having received encouragement from a Portuguese journalist that a deal is there to be done.
In other news, Carrick has made clear to the Red Devils board that a £80m signing cannot be allowed to leave under any circumstances this month, despite the club receiving multiple approaches for their veteran star this month.
And finally, in the race to become United’s next manager, two big names have now seemingly overtaken Oliver Glasner in the race, despite confirmation from the Austrian that he will be leaving Crystal Palace this summer.
