Manchester United could look to sign Conor Gallagher in January if Atletico Madrid are open to letting him leave on a loan deal, according to journalist Ben Jacobs.
The Red Devils were linked with the England international midfielder in the summer as manager Ruben Amorim looked to bolster his squad options.
Man United offered to sign Gallagher on loan, but Atletico were only open to selling him and will ask for around £35 million from suitors in January.
“If Atletico open the door to a loan formula for Conor Gallagher mid-season, I think that’s a deal Manchester United will do,” Jacobs said on the United Stand.
“If they’re to buy him, the price is in excess of £35m, and it remains to be seen whether Manchester United choose to spend that money in January.”
Amorim wanted to sign a defensive midfielder all summer, and he had Brighton & Hove Albion star Carlos Baleba as his top target, while Crystal Palace midfielder Adam Wharton was also on his radar.
However, a deal did not materialise for either player and getting either of them in January will be impossible by the look of things.
Gallagher could be a feasible target, as he is not first-choice at Atletico, having started only four of 12 games across all competitions this season.
Man United won back-to-back Premier League games for the first time under Amorim following recent victories over Sunderland and Liverpool.
They host Brighton on Saturday and will attempt to make it three wins in a row.
Improved form between now and the winter transfer window will not change their plans, as they really could do with reinforcements in midfield.
Adding Gallagher to their squad would be a boost, and the Red Devils will continue to monitor his situation in the coming weeks.
